Greek Islands Guide
Greece
is one of the most famous getaway destinations of Europe. It is composed of
several beautiful islands that have beaches varying from white-sand beaches to
rocky mountain cliffs. For a traveler to truly make the most of his stay in the
country, it is best for him to know a few different facts on the islands of
Greece. A Greek islands guide is a powerful tool for a person to best enjoy his
stay in the islands.
Greece has a lot of various island complexes that have big differences from one
another. The Dodecanese, Cyclades, the Northeastern Aegean Islands, the
Sporades, the Argo-Saronic Islands and the Ionian Islands are few of the island
complexes that are found in Greece. The islands of Crete and Evia may also be
added to the list of island complexes that Greece has.
The Cyclades Island Complex is a complex comprising of 220 islands. Only
around forty of these islands are being inhabited. The Cyclades are located in
the middle of the Aegean Sea, which makes it accessible for people coming from
Athens. The names of these complexes came from the Greek word "kiklos" that
means circle, as this island takes a circular form.
Mykonos and Santorini are two of the most
visited Greek islands that belong to Cyclades. The famous panorama of
cubed-shaped, white-washed houses having blue windows is primarily found in the
Greek islands of Cyclades Island Complex.
The Dodecanese Island Complex got its name from the Greek word "dodeka"
which means twelve. This is so because the major islands of this complex are
twelve. In totality, the number of islands in this complex counts one-hundred
fifty having most of these uninhabited. This Dodecanese Island Complex is found
nearby Turkey because the islands are found in the southeastern part of the
Aegean Sea. The trips through ferries to these islands are infrequent and may
take a longer time. The islands, nevertheless, can be reached by plane.
Rhodes and Kos islands are the
two main and most famous islands of this complex.
The Argo-Saronic Island Complex is a small island complex found near
Athens and Piraeus. This complex has only
seven inhabited islands and was named after the Saronic and Argolic Gulfs. From
Athens, one can reach the island of Salamina in less than ten minutes by ferry.
The island of Spetses can be found at the south of this island complex.
The Sporades is a small island complex located at the northern part of
the Aegean Sea. Only four of the twenty-four islands of the complex are
inhabited namely Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros. These four islands
are popular for having their natural beauty and green forests.
There is another island complex in the Ionian Sea which is known as Eptanisa
in Greek. This word means seven islands, evidencing the seven main islands of
the complex. Ionian Islands are covered by green forests that lie at the end of
beaches and waters.
Crete and Evia are the two
other complexes found in Greece. Crete is an island located at the south of the
Aegean Sea. Evia is an island that can be easily accessed since the island is
connected with a bridge to the mainland of Greece.
